Roadside Assistance
As a truck driver or owner, the chances of a roadside incident increases significantly as your time spent on the road grows. Chances are that you will experience a mechanical breakdown or rig failure during your time as a professional driver. And while these incidents are not completely preventable, there are always steps that can be taken to ensure your safety and to get you back on the road as soon as possible. Here are some tips regarding what to do during a roadside breakdown.
- Be Prepared. Pre and post vehicle checks should already be on your checklist before you hit the open road. As part of your pre-trip planning, be sure to include nearby repair facilities and contact information for your primary roadside assistance. You can trim down the odds of a roadside incident or breakdown simply be being prepared.
- Stay Alert. It is extremely important for professional drivers to stay alert and aware of the surrounding area. This include being cognizant of your exit points, blind spots and bailouts in case of an emergency. If you are broken down on a shoulder, staying alert is vital. Be aware of oncoming traffic and stay inside your vehicle or next to it for as long as you can.
- Useful Supplies. Professional drivers should keep a number of handy supplies with them in case of an emergency. These items should cover a range of roadside incidents and can include tools that will allow for a “quick fix”. Your roadside tool kit should include: wrench set, vice grips, electrical tape, hose clamps, duct tape, extra oil and coolant, fuel conditioner, flares, fire extinguisher, and washer fluid.
- Pull Over Safely. Keep in mind that the first thing you should do if you feel your rig breaking down, is get away from oncoming traffic. If you are driving and feel your truck starting to fail, pulling over at the nearest off-ramp can sometimes be safer than the side of the road. Once in a safe place, turn on your flashers, and set your flares or triangles in front of and behind your rig. Next, contact your roadside assistance if you cannot fix the problem yourself.
